How Old Are You?
So I was talking to my cousin a little while ago and she was telling me that 40 is the new 20. She is 39 and having a problem with the fact that this year she will actually be 40 so this statement has helped her a lot. Yet when I told her that would make me somewhere between 12 and 18 she told me no because the rule only takes effect when you become 40. What sense this makes is beyond me but to understand you would probably have to understand my cousin and you don’t even want to open that can of worms. However, it made me curious; what age are we really? There is the old saying that women mature faster than men but does that mean that men are perpetually in their teen years or just that they are Peter Pan forever vowing never to grow up. And if either is true then how screwed are they. Because they normally die earlier then women so just as they are finally getting to the point that they are mature enough to settle down that could be it. Bam their gone. Come to think about it that could be screwing us women too. But back to the point. If you are only as old as you feel and life begins at 30 then or age system is really messed up.
It’s like how I look at people my age and we don’t look like we should have jobs or run companies or be raising children. We still look like when we were in high school or even junior high. But I also look at my cousin and I still see the same girl that use to pick us up from school with the radio almost blasting (she never was a rebel) and sneaking around to see her boyfriend; we all look the same. But inside I know that we aren’t. We are older and we are raising children and running companies and buying houses and being mature adults, but when did it happen? Because I also know those that have never left their parents house either for financial reasons or because they never saw the point. And with the divorce rate so high more women and men are finding themselves dating again in their thirties and forties and if they have kids then aren’t they possibly still sneaking around to meet their boyfriends? Sounds like teenagers to me. Even Oprah has said that 50 is like the new 20’s or 30’s because of the knowledge and self control you find.
I know that age is not really anything more than a number but when you look at it is it really even necessary? You do what you do and you feel how you feel and does a number really have anything to do with that? Not in my opinion. So next time someone ask you how old you are just look them in the eye and let them know you are living life and when you figure it out you’ll let them know.
