My Life as a Hobby
I am getting ready to head out of town for my annual Memorial Day weekend trip and as I was putting things together last night I was remembering last year. I thought about the fun and mountain air, the art festival and shopping, and I really thought about one of the most defining moment s to me. That was the moment my aunt said that my whole life was a hobby. See my cousin was saying that she wished she had a hobby like I seem to have them and my aunt said that I like hobbies and that my life was a series of hobbies (paraphrased for article purposes). Now I don’t think that she meant I don’t know how to do anything if it isn’t fun or hobby related, but that I like to do things that I like to do. I.e. Hobbies.
At first I was a little put off by this statement. After all who wants to think that those around you don’t see value in what you do in life? But then I started thinking about my family in general. Most of them have jobs that they hate and some rush home to do something else as soon as they can. My uncle is a computer madman, my aunt keeps redecorating her house because she can’t find anyone else that will let her do theirs, and my dad owns more cameras then some “professionals” and has maybe taken more pictures then them too. Even my aunt that works for the state has a masters in geology and has rocks all over her house. So why then is it so bad to find things that you like and make a living at it; at least if you can? I don’t think it is.
Sure I have a lot of hobbies. I am on the computer more than I should be, I love to scrapbook, I crochet my own blankets and scarves, I like to make my own picture videos, and it is rare to see me without a camera. These are all great things and I have made money on almost all of them and that is not even including the freelance writing or short stories or poetry. I guess you could say that I have a lot of hobbies and I think that was the heart of the matter. I don’t mind that I have a lot of hobbies, I get bored easily, but I think I had a problem with the phrasing. My life as a hobby implies that all I do is sit around and play all day and while that does sound fun it simply isn’t the case. Do I have fun at what I do? Absolutely and I think everyone should.
Look the way I see it is that in your life time you are going to work 8 hours a day for 5 days a week for 4 weeks a year for 50-60 years of your life; why shouldn’t you have fun? That is a lot of time! I know it is hard to do and I haven’t always had jobs that were fun in the least, but I have tried to make them fun. And in the end isn’t that the best we can do? Make life fun. You may not always succeed but you can sure have a laugh trying. So do yourself a favor and go out and find a hobby and if you can’t think of one call me; I know a tonJ.
