My Summer Vacation…NOT
When we were in school we would get 3 months off every summer to do absolutely nothing and yet it never seemed like enough time to get our entire nothing in. Yet as adults we get so excited for one week of vacation and we jam pack it with everything we possibly can so that at the end we are so tired it feels like we worked that week too. Why is it that as adults we don’t seem to know how to just enjoy the nothing?
My cousin once said it best after coming off a vacation where she went to California and did all the sights she could possibly see. She came home and went to work Monday and when asked how her vacation went she told everyone that it was so good she needs another vacation to recover from her vacation. I would be willing to bet that there are quite a few of you out there that understand that statement and share in those feelings. Why do we feel like we have to put everything we can into that one short week?
My dad has a couple of week’s vacation coming up although he would swear it is only one week. I know it sounds crazy but to me 16 days does not one week make. Anyway, he is planning on spending 5 days in Arkansas, 2 or 3 days in Indiana, and 4 days in Memphis. I know what you are thinking that doesn’t equal 16 days and you are right. 2 of those days are travel, 1 of them he is cutting the grass and packing, and the last I think he might actually be planning to sleep. How is that relaxing and why does it have to be so much?
Even myself, I am currently back in a town that I lived in for 9 years and yet I have plans to go sightseeing (even though I have probably seen all the sights before), head to a different town, catch up with some friends and go out, oh and somewhere in there relax and get some sleep. Does that make any sense?
I miss the old nothing that went with vacation. The hanging out with your friends at the mall or going to the movies or just watching TV all of which use to feel like it took a whole day to accomplish. Why can’t it be that simple anymore? It’s like we didn’t know how good we had it until it was gone. I think jobs should give an extra week of vacation just to get over the first week. We could clean the house or just hang out or play with our families, but would we? If you had an extra week of vacation what would you do? Me? Let’s just say I would need a few extra to recover from the one extra. Looks like it could turn into summer vacation all over again.
