Summer Fun or Summer-Job?

Published by stlblogger74 at 1:19 pm under Uncategorized Edit This

Remember that last day of school as a kid?  Rushing home knowing you had 3 WHOLE months to do nothing but play?  Sure you might have taken the obligatory trip with the fam to either visit more family or have gone wherever was popular for families that year.  It was a great time just hanging with your friends, staying up late, and basically doing nothing until August or September rolled around.  Those were the days of kids just being kids.  So what happened to those days?

I just got back from hanging with my family and I have to send a blog out to my little cousins whose lives are more planned then most adults.  Their classes just ended last Wednesday and yesterday their new summer classes began and what is sad is that most of these classes have nothing to do with school.  I’m talking swimming, karate, judo, extra summer school, film school (which actually sounds really cool and I would so love to go), weight classes, tutoring classes, football, track, baseball and I can’t even remember what else.  Their mom started planning their calendar back in March or at the very least April and did I mention neither of them is old enough to drive (although that is another class for the summer for the oldest)?  Can you imagine?

I know that part of the reason is because there is so much more trouble for them to get into out there then when we were kids and also there are some amazing opportunities as well like the film school (I am so jealous about this one).  Still with all that they are doing when do they just get to be kids and enjoy their vacation?

Look I’m not a mom and if I were I would probably be just as crazy as my cousin.  I mean you carry this person around for nine months and then give them life and all you want is to protect them and see that they have every opportunity and happiness they can in live.  But do you have to keep them busy all year round?

I just wrote another blog about how excited we are as adults to have just one week of vacation; should we really deprive the little ones of their child-like innocence and yearly fun?  Who knows?  All I know is that I am tired just listening to their schedule and if it were me I would be praying August hurried up.  At least until I got to go to film school (did I mention I’m jealous).
